How to Avoid Frozen Pipes

1. Remove, drain, and store outdoor hoses. Close the inside valves supply valves. Open the outside hose spigot to allow the remaining water to drain.
2. Check around the home for water supplies that may be in unheated areas such as basements, attics, garage areas as well as crawl spaces. These pipes are more susceptible to freezing conditions. Consider insulating materials such as UL-listed “heat tape” or a “pipe sleeve” to protect these pipes. Even newspapers can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes.
3. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors during very cold weather to allow the warmer air to circulate around the plumbing in these areas.
4. During sub-zero temp’s allow your faucets to run a slow drip. This keeps the water running and help’s prevent pipes from freezing.
5. Keep the temperature in your home the same for both day and night. The cost you may incur of heat will be much less expensive than the repair of frozen water pipes.
6.  And finally, if you are leaving your home during the cold season, NEVER set your temperature below 55 degrees.
